RAMONA TREE TRUST
"Growing Ramona's Future, Preserving Ramona's Past"
PRESS RELEASE
Friday, July 26, 2002
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Saturday, July 27th, the Ramona Tree Trust will
undertake the first phase of the replanting of Ramona's
historic Main Street Colonnade. The Colonnade is a unique signature
marker of Ramona and remains one of the healthiest and
robust colonnades of its type in southern California. A total of 15
trees will be planted during the daylong planting in
the blocks between 12th and 13th Streets and at 16th Street. The
replanted trees will begin the planned replacement of heritage
eucalyptus trees lost to the lerp psyllid infestation. The planting is
anticipated to cost approximately $1,500.
A species of eucalyptus, E. Cladocalyx, used by Ramona
pioneers in the original Colonnade, and which is
not susceptible to the psyllid, is being used for the replanting.
Today's Colonnade is made up of hundreds of trees, most
planted by Ramona settlers between 1908 and 1916. A healthy majority of
Colonnade trees remain unaffected by insects and
disease.
The tree planting is being organized and carried out
by Tree Trust Board Members Ann Varnado, Roy Hashburger
and Kevin McNulty. A permit to replant the trees has been secured from
the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS).
In that regard, the Trust would like to thank CALTRANS personnel Chris
Cutler, Steve Alvarez, Glen Larsen and Larry Fagot
for their kind assistance in the issuance of the replanting permit.
The Ramona Tree Trust is a 501(c)(3)non-profit
organization. The Trust incorporated in the fall of 2000
under the direction of long time Ramona tree activist Lark Burkhart,
who previously administered the Trust in conjunction
with People for Trees, a San Diego-based non-profit that held the funds
until the Trust incorporated.
In December of 2001, $86,052.44 was transferred to the
Trust by People for Trees. The funds are a combination
of mitigation monies paid for Colonnade trees cut down during the
1990s. Following payment of incorporation costs, expenses
and tree plantings, $82,735.08 remains in the Trust's accounts.
Saturday's planting is the second tree planting carried out
this year by the Ramona Tree Trust. The first planting, a $1,500
project, was completed this spring in Collier Park, and was
carried out in cooperation with the County of San Diego Department of
Parks and Recreation.
